Semi-synthetic cannabinoids (SSCs) are made by chemically modifying plant-derived cannabinoids, often from low-THC cannabis or hemp, to increase psychoactive effects.

SCs and SSCs appear in many forms, including dried plant material sprayed with chemicals, vape liquids, and edibles. Although sometimes marketed as “legal highs” or “safe alternatives,” these substances are far more potent and unpredictable than natural cannabis, and there is limited research on their effects. Some products are sold openly as SCs or SSCs, but they are also consumed unknowingly through mislabeled or counterfeit black-market products. While the positive effects can resemble those of natural cannabis, such as euphoria, altered perception, and relaxation, the potential negative effects can extend far beyond those of natural cannabis.

Generally, the reported risks include:

severe anxiety

paranoia

dissociation or derealization

hallucinations

rapid heartbeat

high blood pressure

nausea and vomiting

agitation or aggression

psychosis

seizures or convulsions

loss of consciousness

A key difference is how these substances interact with the body. Natural THC is a partial agonist, meaning its effects tend to plateau, while many SCs and SSCs are full agonists, allowing effects to intensify without a clear ceiling. As a result, overdose, withdrawal symptoms, and dependence appear to occur more readily with SCs and SSCs than with natural cannabis. Because these substances are produced outside regulated markets and their chemical formulas frequently change to evade legal controls, users rarely reliably know the contents or potency.

Dozens of chemicals fall under the SC and SSC classification, but some of the more common include:

Synthetic cannabinoids (SC):

ADB-BUTINACA

MDMB-4en-PINACA

JWH-018

JWH-250

HU-210

CP 47,497

Semi-synthetic cannabinoids (SSC):

HHC

HHC-P

HHZ

10-OH-HHC

THCP

THP420

T9HC

T8HC

H3

H3BTA

H2

DNT-9

PHC

H4CBD

CBG9

Delta-8-THC

Delta-10-THC

Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates are highly potent extracts derived from the cannabis plant.
